After a certain number of strenuous, thought-provoking reads, I decide to dip a toe back into the romance genre. I was really looking forward to a reprieve after all of my "heavy" reads. An added bonus is that this book puts you in a right holiday mood!
Oh la la - who doesn't love a little holiday romance! But this is not a YA book, definitely an adult book - steamy, steamy.
I know the romance genre is often difficult to review but it was effortless, light reading for me and I jumped at the chance. If I'm being truthful, I wasn't reading to discover anything deeper than the words I was reading on the page. And wow was it a delight to read without thinking!
One Day in December by Josie Silver. The book is from the point of view of a young woman named Laurie, who falls in love at first sight with a man waiting for a bus. Her best friend, Sarah, and her aptly name him "bus boy" and spend a year trying to find him for Laurie. However, we watch as Sarah brings home "bus boy", her now serious boyfriend Jake, to meet Laurie one day in December. Their relationship somehow encompasses severity, hilarity, holiday drama, and their undercurrent of chemistry quickly develops into something else.
I found Laurie and Jake's banter, both overtly and internally, conflicted and intriguing. I also love when books explore female friendships, which this book did an excellent job doing! The book spans 10 years following our characters and I loved that aspect. Rather than being jammed into a single holiday season, the book is not rushed and can span over a decade.
There was something about this book had that I cannot quite put my finger on but I stayed up until midnight with a great cup of tea finishing this. And I seriously value my sleep. Like must get a minimum of nine hours a night, that kind of value my sleep. I could not put it down! It could have been their tumultuous love affair, how it developed from first sight to unrequited love, or just how the flow of the book kept you entertained almost like watching a movie somewhat.
Once finished, the book will leave your heart warm and fuzzy. Who doesn't love love, right?!
"You tread lightly through life, but you leave deep footprints that are hard for other people to fill."
The back-and-forth that Laurie and Jake play throughout 10 years keeps the momentum throughout the story and their struggles in their developing connection stem from the strife between their hearts and their loyalty to their best friend, Sarah. This book is a fast burn - I mean love at first sight happens on literally page one of the book! Various loves develop through a series of Decembers between our main characters that ensure for a funny, sharp, cozy reading experience.
I enjoyed the book wholeheartedly so I would definitely recommend it!

The tea that I paired with this read was called Peppermint by STASH. Such a lovely, pure peppermint scent as well as having the added benefits of peppermint including decreased bloating, sleep friendly, lowers anxiety, fresh breath, and so much more. The peppermint really put me in the holiday mood, as well as for this holiday book!
Mmmm! Doesn't get much better than that, right?!
I usually gravitate towards STASH teas when I'm in the store. Even when I order tea online, I know I can rely on STASH for clean, fresh, and amazingly scented teas. Highly recommend giving this brand a try!
