Family holiday, two new books, and a historical play thrown in for fun. What a perfect way to start the holiday season!

Commonwealth - A Novel by Ann Patchett
I was drawn to this book because I have always enjoyed the many works of its author Ann Patchett. Commonwealth had received positive reviews so I picked it up with high expectations; unfortunately, the book did not quite measure up. The premise is cleaver, an illicit kiss that causes an affair destroying two marriages and intertwining six children into a blended family. The story can be a bit clunky and hard to follow with the constant switchbacks between characters and time periods. However, in typical Patchett style, the characters are beautifully developed and her observations about the precariousness of life and human nature are insightful and amusing.

The Importance of Being Earnest by Oscar Wilde
If you have an afternoon to spare and want to try a new type of read, I would highly recommend broadening your horizons and reading the comic masterpiece The Importance Of Being Earnest, a 93-page play by Oscar Wilde, considered one the “greatest and most popular works of drama to emerge from Victorian England”. It has been years since I have read a play—not since my college Shakespeare course freshman year at the University of Michigan—and I now ask myself what has taken me so long to return to such a unique form of storytelling. Some of the humor may be a bit dated, but this Wilde classic is at worth least a one-time read!
Holiday tea - what a wonderful way to celebrate this time of year!

I do not have a new tea to share this month, but have been indulging in herbal teas recently.
