For this month's book feature, I chose my favorite read of 2020 so far - The Overstory by Richard Powers.
Heartbreakingly poignant, a must-read for anyone who has even taken a walk and stopped to notice a tree.
Initially skeptical that this book would be too much of a “slog” and one in which a forestry license was required in order to understand its meaning…..this book captivated me from its first line. A blending of individual characters and stories that culminates in a heartbreaking and fascinating ending.
The central topic is trees; yet, the story behind The Overstory is what trees should mean to all of humanity. This book is the type that truly makes you view the world and its nature differently.
This book will make you want to act, to change, to respect, to conserve, to honor. I will never stop noticing “the most wondrous products of 4 billion years of creation” after reading this book. For anyone who wants a way to contribute to saving the world, reading this book is a small start.
I was mesmerized by this book and the teachings of all nine of its characters. I loved it!
